Thousands of Protesters Occupy Times Square, Hundreds Arrested Across U.S.

Thousands of protesters—by some counts as many as 20,000—took Times Square last night, demonstrating for four hours as 74 people were arrested. In Chicago, 175 protesters were arrested for refusing to leave Grant park; in Arizona, more than 40 people were detained in Tucson and Phoenix.

Of the 74 arrested in New York, 42 were arrested at Times Square and another 24 at a Citibank in Greenwich Village. (Apparently another five were arrested for wearing masks.) Two NYPD officers "suffered minor injuries in the chaos" in Times Square. The protesters had marched from Zuccotti Park in the late afternoon, stopping in Washington Square Park along the way and arriving in Times Square by 5, where they were greeting by a large crowd of police (some on horseback), not to mention a few tourists:

Sandra Fox, 69, of Baton Rouge, La., stood, confused, on 46th Street with a ticket for "Anything Goes" in her hand as riot police pushed a knot of about 200 shouting protesters toward her.

"I think it's horrible what they're doing," she said of the protesters. "These people need to go get jobs."

Later in the evening in Washington Square Park, police in riot gear cleared the park of protesters after the midnight curfew; in Chicago a similar situation in Grant Park ended with the arrest 175 demonstrators who intended to spend the night in Grant Park:

Officers individually approached protesters, who had formed a human chain and sat on the ground, to give them the option to leave the park voluntarily or be arrested.

As of 1:30 a.m., at least 50 protesters had been hauled away, while about 150 others stood and continued their demonstrations from across the street on Michigan Avenue.

[...]

Many chanted "The whole world is watching," echoing chants during protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, some of which took place in and around Grant Park.

Minnesota Company Maybe Didn’t Make the ‘Steve Jobs Sweater’ After All

After Steve Jobs died, Bernhard Brenner—the founder of the Minneapolis-based clothing company Knitcraft—reportedly told the press that Knitcraft had manufactured the black St. Croix turtleneck sweaters beloved by the fashion iCon. Brenner claimed that Jobs sometimes called him up just to rave about his sweaters. Sales of St. Croix's $175 "Steve Jobs sweater" subsequently skyrocketed. But was it all BS?

"We have never been in touch with Jobs," Mary Bergin, a Knitcraft vice president, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune late last week. "We, like everyone, have seen on the Internet for years that he wore our product. But we don't know who said it." The company now says that Brenner was misquoted.

Last week, however, a spokesman for the St. Croix line reportedly told the Smoking Gun that "Jobs was a prized customer." TSG reported:

In an interview today, he told TSG that the company had previously "been in contact a little bit with [Jobs's] office." Asked how he knew that the Jobs turtleneck was a St. Croix product, [the spokesman] assured a reporter that company officials had "studied the garment closely" and that Jobs's devotion to St. Croix had "been confirmed by various sources."

After TSG reported on its conversation with the St. Croix spokesman, the company removed language from its website stating that Jobs had been "a fan" of their products. Whoops, sorry everybody—wrong Steve! They were actually referring to fashion icon Steve Guttenberg.

Walter Isaacon's forthcoming biography suggests that Jobs got all his sweaters from Issey Miyake. So if you want to be just like Steve Jobs, you should get your sweaters from Issey Miyake. (Note: You're never going to be like Steve Jobs, so why not give up the quest now and save yourself $175.)

Entertainemt: Zachary Quinto Casually Comes Out Of The Closet

Zachary Quinto comes out of the closet in about the most casual way possible. Shannen Doherty gets married for the third time. Lindsay Lohan faces a year in jail. Sunday gossip wants to close its Citibank account.
  • Star Trek's Zachary Quinto came out of the closet in New York Magazine, and not even with one of those I'M A BIG GAY CLAY AIKEN covers! No, he just kind of went for it in a dependent clause—set aside with (implied) commas!—while answering a question about performing in Angels in America:

Doing that play made me realize how fortunate I am to have been born when I was born. And to not have to witness the decimation of an entire generation of amazingly talented and otherwise vital men. And at the same time, as a gay man, it made me feel like I - there's still so much work to be done. There's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed. The undercurrent of that fear and that, you know, insidiousness still is swarming. It's still all around us. To revisit that world at all, it took a toll on me. It definitely was an incredible experience but it was really daunting at times. [NYM]

  • Shannen Doherty got married for the third time on Saturday, exchanging rings with photographer Kurt Iswarienko, who gives off a, like, "French rugby player" vibe. The wedding was filmed for her upcoming WeTV show, The Shannen Doherty Project, in which she reveals that Charmed was actually a documentary. [People]
  • "At first I was quite Trauerkloß," Scarlett Johansson tells German magazine Gala about her divorce from Ryan Reynolds, "After about a week, I'm constantly running to the gym - I wanted to impoverish me on the cross trainer." Heh! We're exactly the same way! [Gala via NYDN]
  • Lindsay Lohan could face a year in jail over probation violations, unless she digs a tunnel out through the sewer system and swims to Mexico. [TMZ]
  • Also in Lindsay news: DJs at the clubs where she parties are not allowed to play any Pitbull songs, because she is suing him over referencing her in a song. In solidarity we're going to put on Rebelution. [Page Six]
  • On Friday, funny-hatted royal Princess Beatrice graduated from Goldsmiths College, where she majored in potions under Horace Slughorn. What's next? Murdering the four people in front of her in the line of succession, probably. [People]
  • Rick Ross suffered two seizures—on two different planes, like a boss—over the weekend. He's in stable condition, but didn't perform on Friday night as he was scheduled to. [TMZ]
  • Trace Cyrus, Miley Cyrus' mall-goth brother, is engaged to former Disney star Brenda song, despite his haircut. [People]

Winnipeg Boys, 13 And 10, Suspected In Hold Ups

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- A 13-year-old Canadian boy allegedly armed with a can of bear spray and a 10-year-old sidekick are suspected in a string of robberies in Winnipeg, police say.

Police said the young suspects are accused of going on a crime spree that started at a convenience store Wednesday night where they allegedly threatened people but left empty-handed, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday. A short time later, they allegedly robbed a discount store of some cash.

Then the next night, one suspect forced his way into a locked grocery store and took cash from the till. A store clerk commanded her dog to attack the intruder and the boy sprayed the woman and dog with bear spray. Police picked up the 13-year-old in the vicinity and subsequently took the 10-year-old into custody as well, the CBC said. The teenager is facing armed robbery and other charges, while the 10-year-old is too young to be charged under Canadian law, the news network said.

Musicians Bono, left, and K'naan perform together at the "A Decade of Difference" concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011. The concert is part of “Decade of Difference” weekend, which celebrates 10 years of the William J. Clinton Foundation.

The performance was a part of last night's honour to Bill Clinton.
