Cat Survives 19 Storey Fall

A cat named Sugar used up one of her lives yesterday afternoon to survive a harrowing 19-story fall.

Sugar reportedly plunged from her owner’s Boston apartment, landing atop a small mulch patch that helped brace her impact.

“Whether cats can sometimes aim, so if it did it itself or if it was a combination of luck or both,” said Animal Rescue League of Boston asst. manager Mike Brammer. “[I]t managed to hit that small patch of mulch, so it was very soft ground.”

Also contributing to the cat’s survival was a “flying squirrel”-like ability to glide, and the oddly calming effect of reaching terminal velocity. “[The sensation of falling] kind of levels out so they don’t feel as stressed and they relax a little bit,” said Brammer.

Sugar’s 32-year-old owner Brittney Kirk, who was tracked down thanks to a microchip embedded in the animal, said she left the window open so the apartment wouldn’t get too warm for her cat.

She told MSNBC she was relieved to learn her cat would be all right, but not entirely surprised. “[I]f there were a cat to fall 19 stories and to be fine, I think it would definitely be Sugar, because she’s a pretty special cat.”

Gordon Ramsay Suing Montreal Restaurant For $2.75 Mil

Why can't Gordon Ramsay stay out of lawsuits? Now he's slapping a lawsuit on Montreal restaurant Laurier BBQ. Last month the restaurant, which had hired Ramsay on as a consultant back in 2010, severed all ties to the TV chef because he was "too busy to come to the restaurant" and hadn't been in since August. His name was removed from all signage and menus.

According to the Globe & Mail, Ramsay is now suing Danny Lavy of Laurier BBQ and his holding company for $2.25-million in lost license fees through 2016. And an extra $500,000 in damages for defamation (just for good measure).

The lawsuit also reveals what the regular payments to Ramsay were: $48,214 per month was the fee for "his name, likeness and recipes to the restaurant."

City's Equipment Fails to Record Mystery Booms

The city of Clintonville, Wisconsin, has been unable to explain a series of loud noises that started earlier this week and have occurred multiple times since.

The sounds have been described by locals as resembling “thunder, fireworks or someone slamming a heavy door.”

Officials have set up recording equipment in an effort to find the source of the “booming sounds” that have reportedly roused residents from their sleep. That effort has been unsuccessful thus far, as has every attempt to explain away the mystery with man-made causes.

City administrator Lisa Kuss said they have so far ruled out water, sewer, gas, landfill, military, and mining-related origins, as well as known geological phenomena.

vibration-detection devices, set to be installed by Friday, will be used to determine the clamour's episcenter.

A city meeting has been called for 6 PM this evening. A Q&A session will be held, but Kuss has already acknowledged that there is no new information to disseminate at this time.
