Jeopardy Host Alex Trebek Suffers Mild Heart Attack

Notable Canadian game show host Alex Trebek suffered a minor heart attack yesterday. He is already on the mend, but remains under observation at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Today, Sony Pictures Television released a statement about Trebek's condition.
He is expected to fully recover and be back at Jeopardy! when production begins taping in July for the new season, the show's 29th.
According to the release, he is "in good spirits," presumably over-pronouncing a lot of foreign words. The 71-year-old Jeopardy! host has talked about retiring — after all, he's had this gig since 1984. But he'll be trading answers for questions at least through 2014, which is when his current contract runs out.

Several Injured As Northern Ontario Mall Roof Collapses

At least four people were injured when the roof of a shopping mall in Ontario, Canada, collapsed Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The roof was used for parking at the two-story Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake, about 335 miles northwest of Toronto. CBC News quoted a witness as saying cars had plunged through the roof.

"You can see the roof with the cars hanging inside," Joe Drazil, identified as a Zellers employee at the mall, told the CBC.

Mayor Rick Hamilton told CBC that four people were taken to the hospital. A fire official reached by Reuters said emergency workers were still searching for possible victims.

Mall manager Rhonda Bear told CBC News that repairs had been done to the roof over the last year, but not "any huge structural repairs" to the part that collapsed. She also told CBC that the mall owners, Toronto-based Eastwood Mall Inc., ordered a structural study a month ago that she said turned up nothing.

But the CBC said the Elliot Lake Standard newspaper has reported that the mall had had roof leaks for years.

‘Brave’ Enters Box Office With $24.5M

Looks like this Scottish warrior picked up some money-making skills too.

Pixar’s latest, Brave, brought in $24.5 million on Friday night alone—putting it in the running to be the number-one movie this weekend. Although it’s not quite as big an opening as Pixar’s last offering, Cars 2, Brave still fared well for a non-sequel, and the film is expected to bring in $67 million over the weekend.

In second place was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which brought in $6.7 million and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted slipped into third place, with $6.1 million. The dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World disappointed, bringing in just $1.3 million.

Bullied Bus Monitor Raises $550,000

Karen Klein might be going on a permanent vacation.

The online fundraising drive to send the bullied 68-year-old middle school bus monitor off for a little rest and relaxation has now far surpassed its $5,000 target, shooting past half a million dollars on Friday.

On Tuesday, a video of middle school boys taunting Klein while on a school bus in Greece, New York went viral, raising sympathy for Klein. “I am so sorry for the way I treated you,” one of the boys, identified as Josh, wrote in a letter to the bus monitor.

“When I saw the video I was disgusted and could not believe I did that.”

Meet Mugly, The World's Ugliest Dog

Mugly, maybe a contraction for more ugly, beat out 28 other contestants to become the World's Ugliest Dog. Like last year's winner, Mugly is a Chinese Crested and from the UK.
The annual contest takes place in Petaluma, California and it sounds incredible. This year's host was pet psychic animal communicator Sonya Fitzpatrick. Don't worry, she told guests, the 29 contestants aren't offended by the ugly title at all. According to the competition's site:
Contestants are judged for natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes and then those class winners compete for $500 and a trophy. Then the winner of this round goes up against the Ring of Champions—dogs who have claimed the title in past years. This year's Ring of Champions consists of 2002 winner, Rascal, and 2010 winner, Princess Abby.
In addition to $1000, a photoshoot, a VIP stay at the Sheraton Petaluma, and a year's supply of dog treats, Mugly, like the winners to precede him, will "enjoy fame as the World's Ugliest Dog, hitting the talk show circuit [to likely] become a star at local dog events."
